9.10.12. Messmer/Shorewood Varsity Football--also known as Messwood--has been on a roll! The season opener on August 24th was a non-conference win over Hamilton 37-14. This set the stage for the first conference and home game against University School. The Messwood team, consisting of players from both Messmer and Shorewood High Schools, decidedly beat U-School 42-7. On Saturday September 8th, the Greyhounds increased their streak to three, with a win over St. John's Northwestern Military Academy 49-14.
As they continue this football season, the team wants their competition to know they
are in control. Messmer Senior Darren Thomas-Virginia, linebacker, is very hopeful about this
football season. He said "I knew that this season would be better
because as teammates we have grown closer to each other and we will
try our best to get as far as we possibly can. We will leave everything
on the field so we can strive forward.” Darren also
had advice for the underclassmen playing football this year, saying, “They
should stay focused on their academics as well as work really hard In practices,
and when times get tough never give up, because in the end something good will
come out of it to benefit you, and you will remember it for the rest of your life.”
A significant number of the touchdowns have been a result of the "Taylor/John-John Effect"--Shorewood Quarterback Junior Taylor Dennis to Messmer Tight End Junior Jonathan Carson. The team is under the direction of Head Coach and Mathematics Teacher Mr. Drake Zortman, and Defensive Coach and Computer Teacher Mr. Chad Hofmann. Mr. Zortman has the unique opportunity to teach Math at both Shorewood and Messmer, providing a good bridge between the schools. As this season progresses the team will continue to stand by each other
and support one another on and off the field. Messwood also has great fans from both schools to help motivate them
as well.
