"SOS-2K13"

Messmer’s 5th annual "Show of Shows" took place on May 2nd. "Show of Shows" is a student run show, to display artistic talents of Messmer students. Mr. Greg Flattery, music teacher and the show's director said, "This is not my talent, this is Messmer students' talents."

The show consists of music, poetry, rap, and dance. "Being on stage, was a huge fear for some of the students," said Mr. Flattery. For some, this was their first time on a stage with an audience. There were 23 performers, and more than 20 crew members. Each person had an individual task to make the show ran efficiently and smoothly.

The show was action-packed from beginning to end. Sophomore Charda Ward, who sang Eric Benet's "Real Love" said, "I enjoy doing the show every year, because I like displaying my talent, and being a part of the show." The production was filled with standing ovations, and exciting applause.

Parents and friends came out to support the students' hard work.  Mr. Flattery said, “Each year I am impressed with the amount of talent students have here, and encourage everyone to do the show next year." This show is a great way to show your artistic talents, and explore the talents of others.

Junior Edreena Tuggles said, "I liked the show a lot, and I’m always excited to see the show each year." Everyone enjoys the show, parents and students alike. It shows parents what their child is capable of outside of academics and sports, and classmates are able to relate to and look at each other in a different way.

Each year the "Show of Shows" positively grows, and is a great experience.

Prom in Paris

Recently Messmer High School held the 2013 Prom. Many took part in organizing and putting everything together for this significant event. Prom took place at the Italian Community Center. The cost was $60 per person and the theme this year was Paris. Eiffel towers were used to incorporate the theme throughout the hall.
Prom has taken place at the Italian Community Center for several years now, and it will continue through many more. Ms. Amy Gibson, 12th grade counselor, said, “We have prom at the Italian Community Center because everything runs smoothly and the food is great.”
The prom committee was in charge of choosing the theme and colors, and the fundraising to earn the money to have the event.  All of the planning and arrangements for prom begin in September and continue until the actual prom date. The prom committee also created the invitations and arranged for the souvenir key chains, and the water bottles.
Ms. Gibson helped with Prom organization this year as well as Mr. Timothy Gallagher (English Teacher), Mr. Ken Klatkiewicz (Counselor, 10th grade), Ms. Suzanne Welsh (Latino Coordinator), Ms. Lora De Franco (Counselor, 11th grade, Ms. Aleda Kitzmen (Registrar, Math Teacher), and Ms. Claire Zagar (English Teacher). They all collaborated in the bake sales, selling nachos, and the prom planning this year.
Senior Jaqueline Lopez, said, “Prom was amazing and fun; the most memorable part was all of the dancing.” The entire dance floor was full and everyone had a great time. Junior Kentaurias Johnson added, “Prom was a fun night with my friends and a lot of dancing.”

Kentaurias also said, “I’m going to enjoy next year's prom even more because it will be my last year with my classmates in 2014.” Senior, Ivelis Rodriguez said, “It was worth going to Prom because you leave with a lot of memories and have a great time with your friends.”
This year the two people elected as prom king and queen were seniors Alex Matthews and Alexis Walker. Juniors and seniors should join the prom committee team next year and help out with the planning needed to make prom successful for 2014.

Lights Out Messmer!

On May 8 Messmer High School had its first "Lights Out" day. The whole building participated in order to raise awareness about how important it is to conserve energy not just at Messmer but around the world.
On this day faculty and staff raised awareness by turning off some of the lights in the classroom and using less energy. The Director of Campus Ministry, Ms. Anne Haines, manned an informational table at lunch to answer questions about the event. Campus Ministry set up this event so that everyone in the school could learn how important it is to save energy and conserve the earth’s natural resources. Also at lunch students and teachers were asked to limit the amount of waste they use by grabbing less napkins and using the recycle bins to throw away plastic bottles and other recyclables.
The students could ask Ms. Haines for other ways to conserve energy as well. Ms. Haines thinks it is important to participate in this because, “God has called us to be good stewards of his creation. Its essential to building the Kingdom of God.”  Going forward after the "Lights Out" event Ms. Haines said, “We can limit our use of paper as much as possible. We can turn out the lights when we leave a room and use natural light as much as possible. We can use our recycling bins much more than we do. We could also move toward not using products around the school that are not recyclable/ renewable.”
Along with Ms. Haines, students also thought that it was a good idea for Mesmer to go green for a day. Junior Cassandra Hernández said, “I think it was a good idea for Messmer to do this because it raised awareness of the fact that we need to be more green.” She also added, “Messmer should have more days that we save energy and get more schools and businesses to participate so it could have a greater impact.”
This was a great event for Messmer and hopefully we can expand it in the future not just at Messmer but at all three schools and maybe the city of Milwaukee. It never hurts to get a little greener so we can fulfill God’s will for us on earth.
